Eike Batista began to shape what is now the EBX Group in the 1980s. He traded diamonds and gold. In 1982, he built the first mechanized alluvial gold mining plant in Brazil. Over the decade, Batista became the largest shareholder and an executive of Canadian TVX Gold, a public company listed on the Canadian Stock Exchange. Since the 1980s, he has created and put into operation eight gold mines in Brazil and Canada, as well as a silver mine in Chile and three iron ore mines in Brazil.
Between 2004 and 2010, the EBX Group has created, structured and taken public its five companies: MMX (mining), MPX (energy), OGX (oil), LLX (logistics) and OSX (offshore industry). In 2011, REX was established to identify business opportunities in the real estate market and, through its Canadian acquisition company, AUX, it acquired a controlling stake in Ventana Gold, a Canadian mining company, which marked the group’s return to gold mining.
